Truth, Lies and Politics at the JCC with Barney Frank
With Barney Frank's recent announcement that he is retiring from public office, there may not be too many more opportunities to hear him speak in an official capacity. With his well-known wit and candor, Congressman Frank is sure to be at his sharpest when he takes on the topic of Truth, Lies and Politics at the Leventhal-Sidman JCC on Tuesday, Jan 3 at 7:30pm.
But is truth in politics really possible? Is there something inherent in the realm of politics, or in the character of the people who go into politics, that keeps the truth at bay? Frank, in his 16th term representing Massachusetts’ 4th Congressional District, will tackle these thorny issues with journalist Rob Kuttner and Father J. Bryan Hehir, S.J., both veteran observers of the political scene.
Kuttner was a columnist for Business Week for 20 years. Father Hehir is a religion professor at Harvard University. He is also Secretary for Health Care and Social Services for the Archdiocese of Boston and the former President and CEO of Catholic Charities USA. The discussion will be moderated by Leonard Fein, an author and essayist whose columns have appeared in The New York Times, The New Republic, and The Nation.
The event is sponsored by the Jewish Community Centers of Greater Boston Ryna Greenbaum JCC Center for the Arts. The series is underwritten by The Rita J. and Stanley H. Kaplan Family Foundation with additional donor support from Carolynn H. Levy and Alan Sharaf. Cost is $15. Students and seniors: $12.
