Kosher, Pastured Chicken Available for the Holidays
Judaism asks us to care about a lot of things. We're supposed to be thoughtful about the food we eat. We're supposed to treat workers well. We are expected to be stewards of our planet and guarians of its ecology. Often, these values can compete with each other, particularly when it comes to eating kosher meat.
That's where Naftali and Anna Hannau come in. They are farmers who have committed themselves to making ethically produced kosher meat available through their new business, Grow and Behold. I'll let you read all about the deals back on their website and get to the exciting (and time-sensitive) news: they're making their chicken available in Boston, just in time for the holidays.
Orders are due by Friday, August 27 for delivery on Tuesday, August 31st. There are two pickup locations: Hebrew College in Newton and Temple Emunah in Lexington. Each institution will receive 5% of the sales as a donation from Grow & Behold. From what I've read on their website, it sounds like if enough Boston-area people are interested in making this an ongoing relationship, Naftali (aka "Naf") & Anna are willing to set up a delivery schedule.
I haven't yet tasted the chicken from this particular farm, but Naf was the shochet (kosher butcher) involved with Loko (a group promoting Locally grown Kosher meat) when I spent a day on a local farm last summer plucking and kashering chickens. He's a great guy, good at what he does and committed to the ideal that caring about eating kosher shouldn't mean compromising on any of our other ethical commitments. I'm excited to support his new venture, and I hope at least some of our readers will be excited to do so too!
