Site feedback and known issues

by Patty Jacobson on behalf of JewishBoston.com / February 09, 2010

Much as we expected, there's much that's working about the site and just a few things that we're working on. We'd appreciate your help!

Please send your comments to Feedback@JewishBoston.com.  You can also join and post a comment - that would be fabulous!  Please note outstanding issue #1 below regarding registration; the process is clunkier now than we'd like.

Outstanding issues

-  Registration flow needs smoothing - and needs to maintain state.  If you join to comment on a post, the registration confirmation email should take you back there.

-  Facebook Connect isn't quite working yet.  It worked in the test server but I suspect the production server needs a little bit of tweaking.  Thanks to Neal K. for pointing it out.

- The featured events on the Home Page should be sorting by date, not by the time featured.

Fixed issues

-  Right column event display in Voices.  Thanks to Jim B. for noticing it.

Yes, most recent posts show up at the top (it's a feature not a bug).  We looked at a number of other sites and it was split 50/50.

What would you prefer?

Are the most recent comments showing up at the top (just below the main article)?  Is that a bug or a feature? :)  (It's a little confusing if someone is reading the page from the top down, or if they're familiar with the way comments work most other places on the web...)

Just a quick note to let you know that we are aware that sharing in Facebook has a bug right now as well. We have made the developers aware of this issue.

Thanks to Dara K for the following comments:

Congratulations!! The site looks fantastic!! I have a few brief bits of feedback, but overall, I think it’s incredible:

1. I love that I was able to quickly and easily find Jewish events close to Somerville that I hadn’t previously heard of!!

2. While login seems simple to me, it doesn’t explain what to type in each box. For people less familiar, you may need to write out “username” and “password”

3. On the front page, the Passover banner looks like the bullets should be clickable, but they were not (Attend a Seder, Search for Recipes, Tell your Story) [NOTE: WE'RE SWITCHING THE BANNER MOMENTARILY]

4. On the front page, when I clicked events “Near Me,” some of the events listed were highlighted with a check mark. I don’t know what that means. [MEANS THAT THEY ARE "FEATURED". POINT TAKEN]

5. “View Jewish Calendar” does not link to a Jewish calendar – it links to a listing of Shabbat info. While this is helpful, I think you may want to re-label that link. At the same time, you may want to include a complete Jewish calendar on the site somewhere as well. I often find I need a Jewish calendar with a complete listing of all Jewish holidays, Shabbat times, etc. (for example, the CJP calendar has all this info). [TOTALLY AGREE, ON THE LIST]

6. In the Events, Voices and Resources sections, the blue banners that have different categories seem useful, but when I clicked them I didn’t understand what they did. My first thought was that they were search terms, but items in other categories still popped up in my searches. Basically I found them a bit confusing and not too helpful. [SO IMAGINE THAT THERE'S AN EVENT ABOUT ISRAEL TARGETED TO YOUNG ADULTS. IT WOULD SHOW UP IN BOTH CATEGORIES.]

You're right, David.  I'll make sure it's on the list.

In the resources section, Organizations' programs are linked to beneath their pictures, but on those programs pages there's no link back to their parent Organization (or am I missing it)?
