What do you love about Rosh Hashanah?

by julsunger on behalf of Reform Jewish Outreach Boston / September 06, 2012

For a little over a week, I’ve been asking people, on facebook and in person, what they enjoy about Rosh Hashanah. For many, it is the only time during the year where they can stop and actually take a moment to reflect on their life and think about what they want to accomplish or work on (either personally or professionally) for the coming year. For others, it marks the end of one year, and the beginning of another, kind of like the secular New Year, but with a more spiritual beginning. For all, they mentioned the word community: that the Jewish community feels exceptionally strong and vibrant during the High Holy Days. How amazing is it, that all over the world, Jewish families and individuals are celebrating the same holidays, and they have been doing it for thousands of years?

For me, Rosh Hashanah marks the beginning of fall and the start of a new year, a clean slate-so-to-speak. I also revel in all the little traditions, like dipping apples in honey, devouring round raisin challah and spending time with my family. But my favorite part is celebrating and worshiping with a community. I’ve spent the High Holy Days with communities abroad and it’s an incredible experience to see Jewish people coming together to celebrate these age-old holidays. However you choose to celebrate Rosh Hashanah, I hope it’s meaningful and special for you. L’Shana Tova Umetukah (Have a good and sweet new year!)!

What do you love about Rosh Hashanah or the high holy days?
