Nanny Balas is one of the five Boston-Haifa Connection Young Leadership Committee members visiting from Haifa. She is a corporate and commercial lawyer and has also worked to promote access to justice for women from disadvantaged communities in Israel. She’s partnering with Morris Singer on the Boston side to form a Boston-Haifa young lawyers law journal, which will be detailed in a future post.

This is her first trip to Boston, one she says has been great so far:

“We’re having a lot of fun, but we’ve learned a lot of things, too,” Nanny said. “I feel like my whole activity [with the partnership] will be different because of this trip. I have the faces behind what I do and I feel a part of a greater mission than I felt until now. I’m really happy that I came.

“There are so many great people here. I felt that before, but it’s been enhanced because of this trip and gives me the sense that there is true meaning to what I do. It’s power and it’s strength. You imagine a community and you can never imagine it the way it really is. The power people have when they work together is truly amazing.

“Yom Kippur was very interesting. I have to say it gave me a lot to think about when I go back home. It also made me appreciate the Jews who live here, doing what they do to observe the holiday and preserving their heritage, their tradition. That’s not trivial at all. The outside world goes on around them, but they still celebrate.”
