Welcome back from the summer! As the school year begins, many students are preparing for another year of learning. For some of them, they will learn to read for the first time.
Do you recall what it was like learning to read? Volunteer Lee Bauer was reminded first-hand as she worked to learn a foreign language, and shares her story of empathy and understanding.
Lee has been tutoring with GBJCL for 7 years, two hours a week at the Stapleton School in Framingham. As a former teacher, Lee works with many different types of students and in many different settings. She regularly works with at least one student individually, often a student with a particular learning challenge. This year, her student, a 3rd grader, is an English Language Learner.
Lee practiced English with her student in a myriad of ways, from reading and writing, playing word games like Boggle, and talking together. As a teacher, Lee knew useful strategies to use with her student, but she didn’t relate personally to her struggle until she made the connection to her own project of learning Hebrew.
