Jimmy the Greatest!

by Jairo Buitrago, Rafael Yockteng (Illustrations), Elisa Amado (Translation)

For some, summer’s blissful, long; open ended days are a treat.  For others it can leave them twiddling their thumbs.  Young Jimmy in Jairo Buitrago’s recent book knows that feeling well.  He lives in a tiny Caribbean town where there’s not much going on. One day, however, Jimmy stumbles upon one unexplored spot, the local boxing gym.  At the gym he finds a way to fill his days, and it is not all knockouts and jabs.  Jimmy unearths inside the gym an informal library dedicated to material about Muhammad Ali. Jimmy soon discovers that in addition to a love of boxing he also has a passion for reading, especially about the boxing champ. As the story unfolds, Jimmy combines his two loves; reading and boxing, and renews his enthusiasm for his small town and breathes new life into the gym.

Jairo Buitrago’s inspiring story is told with through unique and fun drawings by Rafael Yockteng.  Together, this author and illustrator team tells a funny, expressive and poignant story accessible to a wide audience.  This book is also available in a Spanish edition, ¡Jimmy, el más Grande!, and was recently named one of the “ Best Books of the Year in Venezuela.
