OtisJust imagine –  what if every child read the same book?  Well that would be Jumpstart’s premiere national campaign, Read for the Record.  A special time of the year, when millions come together to celebrate literacy and support Jumpstart’s efforts to promote early childhood education. On October 3rd, we invite you to join adults and children all across the country to read Otis by Loren Long in support of Jumpstart’s mission to see that every child in America enters kindergarten prepared for success. Last year, 2.3 million people participated in Read for the Record and this year GBJCL is proud to participate, to help surpass that number.

If you’re familiar with classics like Mike Mulligan and His Steam Shovel and The Story of Ferdinand, author and illustrator Loren Long has crafted a similarly unforgettable new story—and character—continuing the great tradition of books about friendship and the power of perseverance.

Otis is a lovable tractor. He cares for his farm and farmer. He particularly dotes on the little calf next to him in the barn. The two become great friends, romping in the fields, leaping bales of hay and playing games by Mud Pond.  But soon a new machine joins the farm and replaces Otis. He is cast away, until one day, when his old friend needs help only he can provide.

Ages birth -8, grade Pre k-2
