Do you know a student working to improve his or her vocabulary? If so, then “Taboo” is the game for you. In this spirited word race, players try to get their teammates (or with a 2-players, opponent) to guess a word, but here’s the catch: they are not allowed to say a number of other commonly related words. For example try getting a team to guess the word Aquarium when you can’t say water, bubbles, goldfish, gallons, or tank. In the traditional game gesturing is not allowed, but in a school setting it could add to the fun and may help some students develop valuable kinesthetic associations with vocabulary. To build excitement, use a timer to measure the length of a turn, and a buzzer for children to press when someone makes a mistake or goes over time. Play with the official deck, or make your own using vocabulary that the child is working on in school.
