As a recent graduate from an art institution, this holiday season I created at: 2013-12-05have been beset by relatives asking, “What are you doing with your music degree?” It is my pleasure to announce that I am involved in the vibrant music community of Boston by interning at the Boston Jewish Music Festival. This opportunity is very exciting for a number of reasons.

In this internship I get the chance to explore the inner workings of a prominent music organization. Experience goes a long way these days, and I relish the ability to work hands on in the musical world. Plus, I get to learn all sorts of new skills as I stumble down this road: like how to write a blog for instance!

But what really makes this internship a meaningful experience for me is what the BJMF represents, and to me that is a musical culture. Music is one of the most powerful forces that can create, expand, and bring together a community. The ability to come together for a month of celebration and exploration of Jewish music is an amazing thing, and I’m excited to be a part of it’s fifth, and biggest, year yet.

No matter what your taste in music is, there’s something being played for you. From rock to jazz, young to old, religious or secular, I am constantly surprised at the scope and depth of the offering of this festival. In truth, that is probably my favorite thing about this internship – being exposed to, and hearing such, incredible music.
