With memories of Thanksgivukkah still relatively fresh, this year gave us another nice celebratory (and not unprecedented) coincidence, with Easter falling on the second day of Passover, and the Red Sox season opener as a Monday postscript.
As I rode down a traffic-free 128 this morning I was feeling pretty good, and pretty full from the weekend. It was a weekend of three enormous meals that featured 30 people, 19 pounds of turkey, 15 pounds of brisket, three dozen eggs, many boxes of nasty Passover desserts, several bottles of wine, an egg hunt, 20 pounds of potatoes, and 10 pounds of carrots. We had Seders and egg-hunts, party dresses and polo shirts, and three different groups of friends and family at each meal. By the time we hit 8:00 on Sunday all of my kids needed to hit the hay, which among things pushed the communal viewing of The Ten Commandments to a night when we would all be home together at a reasonable hour who knows when.
After all that excitement, at 3:00 today, Red Sox Nation places the burden of championship expectations on the shoulders of last year’s fifth starter, a starter who had the worst year, arguably, of any pitcher in baseball. Of course, as with most weekday afternoon openers, there’s 0% chance I’ll be watching it, but after a long, dark winter of basketball and hockey mediocrity, there is some hope for the Red Sox this summer. However, with a ragtag collection of pitchers and potent batting lineup, the Sox seem destined for 81 wins… but I’m sure we’re all wishing for a little more.
And as the perfect post-script for your gluttonous weekend, just like your brandy or black Russian that finished off your holiday meals, the last course will be served tonight at 9:00, as Wisconsin and Duke will battle it out for the NCAA men’s basketball championship. With any luck the Badgers will follow up their upset of Kentucky with another upset win over Duke, and celebrate their first-ever title tonight at around 11. If that happens, all your Jewish friends who went to Wisconsin (and I have about 500 if Facebook is any indicator) will be partying long into the night.
