Israel is a liberal democracy that guarantees religious freedom to all. But Israel’s system of governance also provides for the establishment and support of religion. This has resulted in a politicized system that has prompted accusations of government sanctioned discrimination. Is the role of the state in religion the Achilles heel of Israeli democracy or can this relatively young democracy fulfill its founding ideals?
