Standing at the Gates of Repentance: personal questions and challenges as we pray ourselves into the new year
The High Holy Days will soon be upon us. Our preparations for Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur include ordering our service tickets, cooking delicious meals, shopping for new clothes to wear, or cleaning the house. But let’s not forget about our spiritual preparations for the High Holy Days as well. Traditionally, special prayers and readings are added to the daily worship service for the entire month before Rosh Hashanah to help us begin to focus on repentance and on asking for forgiveness. Some communities even sound the shofar each day to remind us that the High Holy Days are drawing near.
A special service is traditionally held late at night at the end of the Shabbat preceding Rosh Hashanah. This service, called Selichot, helps us to focus on our need to renew ourselves for the new year, our efforts to repent for what we have done wrong, and our desire for forgiveness from God and from other people.
Together we’ll prepare ourselves for the High Holy Days as we examine traditions around the High Holy Day prayers, and participate in prayer led by our rabbis and cantor. The evening will include Havdallah, dessert, and study, and will conclude with a beautiful Selichot ritual in the Rothman Chapel.
