Adult Learning at Temple Sinai: “The Kibbutz”

Next Event: January 25, 2015 Brookline

The kibbutz, the twentieth century’s most interesting social experiment, is now in the throes of change. Instrumental in establishing the State of Israel, defending its borders, creating its agriculture and industry, and setting its social norms, the kibbutz played a central role in a nation’s life. Over the years, the kibbutz has been marginalized and is undergoing a radical transformation. In three sessions – one of which will be made up of films – we will look at the kibbutz in its historical context and see how and why changes have occurred. We will look at the catalysts for these changes as well as the failure of the unique kibbutz education system to perpetuate communal values, and consider what the future will bring. Taught by Temple Sinai member Amos Lassen, the class will take place over three Sundays, January 25, February 1 and 8, 2015, 9:30 – 10:50 a.m. The community is invited to join us. Temple Sinai is a welcoming Reform congregation centrally located in Brookline’s Coolidge Corner neighborhood.
