In this 6-part series, we will look at a selection of the Kinot (liturgical poems) of Tisha B’av and investigate their historical background, poetic turns-of-phrase, and major ideas and themes. We will learn about the events that the Kinot commemorate and the historical context of the authors writing the poems, with an eye toward appreciating their relevance even in changing times. We will also look at their employment of poetic techniques and allusions to Talmudic and Biblical material. Selections are likely to include the Families of the Kohanim, Titus and the prophet’s blood, Yirmiyahu meets the prophets and others.

Yaakov Jaffe serves as the rabbi of the Maimonides Minyan, and as a member of the Judaic Studies Faculty at Maimonides School. Rabbi Jaffe has lectured and written widely on topics of Tanach, Literature and Poetry, and Jewish Law. Rabbi Jaffe’s approach to Tanach is informed by his BA in English literature from Columbia University, and MA in Bible from Yeshiva University.
