Maimonides explains his profound ideas about Judaism in “the Guide for the Perplexed,” a book that is notoriously, and perhaps deliberately, difficult to understand. In this course, we will take another route to access his thinking. We will study the opening section of his magisterial code of halacha, the Mishnah Torah. In this section, which he calls Yesodei haTorah, the Foundation Principles of the Torah, Maimonides explains in wonderfully clear and even poetic language those of his ideas about Judaism that he considers to be the most important. We will read the Hebrew text, which will be provided to the students with a line-by-line literal translation.

Reuven Cohn received his ordination and a graduate degree in Education from Yeshiva University, did advanced graduate work in Jewish Studies at Harvard University, and earned a law degree from Yale Law School. Designated a Ma’ayan Master Teacher, he has given numerous adult education classes in the Boston area and teaches for the Meah program, Hebrew College and Maimonides School.
