Years after her grandparents had passed away, Wildman found a cache of letters written to her grandfather revealing the destroyed world that was her family’s prewar Vienna. One woman’s letters stood out: her name was Valerie Scheftel—Valy. She was her grandfather’s lover who had remained in Europe after he fled to the United States in 1938. Why had she not left with him? What had happened to her? Learn about Wildman’s research journey across five different countries and what she discovered about one woman’s story. About the speaker: Sarah Wildman writes about the intersection of culture and politics in Europe and America. Over the last decade, she has lived in and reported from Paris, Vienna, Madrid, Washington, Jerusalem, and Berlin. She was the 2010 Peter R. Weitz Prize winner, from the German Marshall Fund–a prize awarded for excellence in European coverage. Wildman has been on staff at The New Republic, a senior correspondent at The American Prospect and the Washington correspondent for The Advocate. She has made numerous television and radio appearances and has lectured in the United States and abroad.
