Journalist Linda K. Wertheimer: Teaching Kids About Religion in an Age of Intolerance

November 22, 2015

Award-winning journalist and former Boston Globe education editor Linda K. Wertheimer will discuss her new book Faith Ed., Teaching About Religion In An Age of Intolerance. Wertheimer’s narrative takes an intimate look at the new debate over religion in public schools. Courts long ago banned public school teachers from preaching of any kind, but the question remains: How much should schools teach about the world’s religions — any and all religions? Wertheimer’s book illustrates how answering this question in recent decades has pitted schools against their communities. A book-signing and reception will follow the talk.

“In this wide-ranging, thoughtful book, former Boston Globe education editor Linda K. Wertheimer looks at the current state of confusion over what works and what doesn’t when schools try to teach kids about religion. Along the way, she talks with the parents, teachers, and children involved in recent controversies — it’s heartening to hear how many of the kids who have been exposed to the history and ideas of religions other than their own seem to appreciate what they’ve learned.” – Kate Tuttle, Boston Globe book critic.
