In the wake of the Holocaust, Catholic-Jewish relations underwent a dramatic transformation that culminated in the 1965 publication of the Vatican document Nostra Aetate. Officially titled the Declaration on the Relations of the Church to Non-Christian Religions, Nostra Aetate called for Catholics to recognize that which is “true and holy” in the Jewish faith and in other religions, including Hinduism, Buddhism, and Islam. Notably, the document states that Jews cannot and should not be held responsible for the death of Jesus. The document affirms God’s covenant with the Jewish people as that which was first and that which continues. Importantly, Nostra Aetate makes clear that the Catholic Church rejects and denounces any form of anti-Semitism. A revolutionary document, Nostra Aetate marked a new beginning for Catholics and Jews, and paved the way for a remarkable growth of good relations and collaboration over the past 50 years.

We are honored to celebrate the 50th anniversary of Nostra Aetate with a special address by Cardinal Seán O’Malley to the Jewish community. We hope you will join us for an evening of learning, conversation, and friendship.
