Artists-in-Residence Weekend with Sue Horowitz and EJ Cohen

On Shabbat Shira we celebrate a very special moment in the Torah when Moses, Miriam and the Children of Israel crossed the Sea of Reeds and burst into joyous song and dance. We will celebrate the Shabbat of Singing this year by welcoming our artists-in-residence, Sue Horowitz and EJ Cohen, as together they lead our community in song and prayer. Come lend your voice to this special Shabbat service as we celebrate our people’s trek from slavery to freedom in song.

Join us for a very special Havdalah and coffeehouse with Jewish singer/songwriter Sue Horowitz and EJ Cohen, ASL interpreter for the deaf. This evening will include original songs by Sue and will be interpreted by EJ in American Sign Language.
Sue Horowitz is a singer-songwriter from coastal Maine. A professional musician since the age of 17, Sue has performed in both secular and spiritual venues. Her warm and engaging style creates a feeling of community wherever she sings. With musical influences such as James Taylor, Joni Mitchell, Pete Seeger, and Carol King, she writes and performs music that is easily accessible to anyone that wants to listen or sing along.
Sue has created three CDs: Eleven Doors Open, In the Water, and The Power and the Blessing. Sue’s “Hinei Mah Tov” has been included on Transcontinental Press’s Ruach 5767 compilation and is included in the Central Conference of American Rabbi’s Hagaddah. Her “Y’varechecha” was a finalist in the spiritual category of the Just Plain Folks awards.
EJ Cohen is a certified ASL sign language interpreter and Jewish educator who has spent the last 30+ years combining both passions. She has been the interpreter at CAJE conferences, URJ biennials, concerts, and nearly every other life cycle event imaginable. She has led workshops at CAJE, NewCAJE, Limmud UK, Limmud Boston, LimmudNY, Hava Nashira, and for various interpreting organizations in the US and the UK. EJ now lives in Concord NH, where she interprets in a local school system, teaches at Temple Beth Jacob and is active in the local theater group. Her new partnership with Sue Horowitz allows her to teach the signs to accompany some amazing music. EJ loves working with Sue Horowitz, “whose music makes my hands dance.”
