Conflict or Cooperation: The Environment and the Peace Process

March 23, 2015

Featured speakers:
• Daniel Shek, Former Ambassador of Israel to France & Chair of Arava Institute’s Public Council in Israel
• Clive Lipchin, Director, Center for Trans-boundary Water Management at the Arava Institute

Post elections in Israel, what are the prospects for renewing the peace process? Is the peace process fiction or reality? How can growing populations in the Middle East share scarce water resources? What is the role of non-governmental reconciliation efforts? Is the environment a force for cooperation, or for conflict? Please join us to learn from two experts in the fields of diplomacy and trans-boundary water management.

Ambassador Shek has extensive experience in European affairs and has participated in a number of chapters of Arab-Israeli negotiations. He is a strong believer in “soft power” and people to people processes and has throughout his career devoted special attention to projects in the areas of commerce, R&D, and culture.

Dr. Clive Lipchin joined the faculty of the Arava Institute in 2003 where he teaches a multidisciplinary course on water management in the Middle East. Dr. Lipchin oversees research projects, workshops and conferences that focus on trans-boundary water and environmental problems facing Israel, Jordan, Gaza and the West Bank. His specialty is in water resources management and policy.
