The special Shabbat before Purim, Shabbat Zakhor will feature workshops on themes related to Purim as well as the weekly Torah portion, including:

Interactive Movement – This guided, improvisation-based movement session will incorporate the themes of this week to explore how the body can help us connect to our spiritual selves, to one another, and to God. This session is excellent for all ages, all you need is a desire to play!

Purim Scenes – What was Mordechai really thinking when he sent Esther to the king’s palace? Why did Haman have it in for Mordechai? Delve into the true motivations of the Purim characters that you know so well (or thought you did) through these drama techniques!

Handmade Midrash (for adults and teens) – “The goal of the handmade midrash exercise is to awaken and nourish each individual’s capacity for the creation of midrash by introducing to the study of Bible…a visual language that is parallel but antecedent to the language of words.” (Handmade Midrash by Jo Milgrom) Together we will read the Torah portion and classical midrash, and we will then explore a few elements of the text through the use of a very simple art activity, creating our own modern midrash on the Torah portion.

Agreeing to Disagree: A Jewish Model of Constructive Conflict – The 9th of Adar was the day, approximately 2,000 years ago, when an initially peaceful and constructive conflict between Beit Hillel and Beit Shammai erupted into violence, leading to the death of thousands. This Shabbat, join with communities across the globe for text study and discussion to turn the 9th of Adar into a day dedicated to the Jewish study and practice of conflict resolution.
