JALSA Tzedek Salon: Fair Share Campaign Training

September 10, 2015

Have you been following the news? Throughout the country, advocates have been working on campaigns to support workers! The Jewish Alliance for Law and Social Action is on the Steering Team of Raise Up MA, a coalition that last year, was successful in encouraging the legislature to raise the minimum wage to $11 an hour by 2017, and in encouraging the electorate to pass an earned sick leave ballot initiative.

Raise UP MA is now launching a Fair Share Campaign which seeks to address the serious economic inequality in the state through a constitutional amendment. This amendment would create an additional tax of four percentage points on annual income of more than one million dollars a year. The revenue created would be invested in public education and transportation and infrastructure. The goal of the Raise Up MA coalition is to collect 120,000 signatures before November 18, 2015.

Now it is time to take it to the streets and start gathering signatures! JALSA has pledged to collect 1,800 signatures. We need your help to reach this goal!

For September’s Tzedek Salon, we invite you to this training session cosponsored by JALSA, Raise Up MA, and PDM (Progressive Democrats of MA). We will be delving deeper into the root causes of this inequality by looking at the state’s budgets and revenue, explore the details of this amendment, and cover training and information on how to gather signatures.

The event will be held in Hunneman Hall of the Brookline Public Library, 361 Washington Street, Brookline from 6:45 p.m.- 8:15 p.m.

This event is a great introduction to learning the ins and outs of community organization and we hope to see you there!

Cannot make the training but still want to be involved? Email hannah.jalsa@gmail.com about opportunities to make a difference in the fight against income inequality.

Tzedek Salons bring young Jews, in their 20-30s, and social activists together with important policy makers, attorneys and academics for casual conversations at local bars to explore cutting edge issues facing our society and state today.

Event Location: Brookline Public Library
