People of the Book-but which book? at Congregation Beth Elohim in Acton. Class Begins November 1, 2016, meets Tuesdays, 7-9:30 p.m.
Most people associate the phrase “People of the Book” with the Bible. But in reality, the book or books that the Jews have poured over for centuries, the books that have really created the “Jewish mind” are the books written by the early rabbis. The classics of rabbinic Judaism are the Talmud, Midrash and Mishnah.  But for all their vital importance, these genres of literature dating from late antiquity into the early medieval period are much less well known and understood than the Bible. This class will explore this vital period of Jewish literature.  What is the unique character of the Mishnah and how is it relevant to us today?  What kind of thinking went into creating a midrash?  What is the goal of Talmudic argument and how has it shaped Jewish thought?  We will examine primary sources as well as critical scholarship.
