This course approaches the Siddur (prayer book) as a central text of Jewish history, theology and ritual.  It will focus on the sources and religious meaning of prayers, with special emphasis on the Psalms and Song of Songs.  We seek to understand how the Siddur developed, from biblical and rabbinic periods through modern times, with particular attention developed to the conceptual underpinnings of prayer.  Main themes: the social and ethical underpinnings of prayer; prayer as a spiritual experience; the interrelationship between prayer and ritual. including rites of sanctification and the rites of memory; prayer and gender; mystical prayer; philosophical perspectives on prayer.

Meets Mondays, 7:45-9:45 p.m., beginning September 12, 2016
