Saving Jamaica’s Jewish Heritage
On Tuesday, April 26, at 12:30 p.m., Bonim is privileged to present Ainsley Cohen Henriques, a leader of the tiny Jewish community in Jamaica and the guardian of the island’s rich Jewish history and its traditions.
While Mr. Henriques’ family settled in Jamaica in 1745, he has traced the histories of many Jamaican families as far back as 1497. Along the way, he discovered that Abraham Cohen Henriques, a Jewish merchant from Amsterdam and a distant relative, arrived in Jamaica in 1670 on a mission to find the hidden treasure of Christopher Columbus.
Mr. Henriques is the past president of the Jamaican Jewish Congregation; Honorary Consul for the State of Israel; founder of the Jamaican Jewish Heritage Center; tireless worker on the restoration of the island’s centuries-old Jewish cemeteries, and currently chair of the Jamaican National Heritage Trust.
Our guest speaker will keep you spellbound as he presents the story of the island’s rich Jewish history and his efforts to keep it alive. His daughter, Melanie, who is a member of our congregation, will introduce her father.
Room 201 will open at noon for temple members and their guests who plan to bring their own lunch. Keeping in mind that April 26 falls during Passover, Bonim will provide a variety of Pesach-appropriate desserts and beverages.
The cost for the afternoon is $5 per person. Payment can be made by check, payable to Temple Shalom of Newton and sent to Cynthia Dember at 85A Seminary Avenue #346, Auburndale, MA 02466.
