Open to women only.
Join us as we continue our in-depth study of Prophets with Sefer Melachim Aleph (the Book of Kings I), which chronicles the establishment of the Davidic dynasty and the split of the unified monarchy in Israel. We will begin our exploration with the final four chapters of the Book of Samuel which summarize the foundations of kingship in Israel and serve as a segue to the establishment of the Davidic dynasty with the reign of King Solomon. We will follow King Solomon’s attempts to create an ideal society, only to watch it slip away from him and ultimately fail. How does a person blessed with all the qualities that were needed to succeed allow the monarchy to become fractured in one mere generation? We will learn about the split monarchies of Israel and Judah and their struggle against each other for power.
In each session, students will have the opportunity to study the text in small groups with the aid of the instructor. The remainder of the class will be a group lecture with discussion, focusing on a close reading of the biblical text and related commentaries. This course will aspire to be welcoming and accessible to students of all levels. Please bring a Tanakh with you.
