Temple Sinai of Sharon will host a workshop on Jewish Genealogy on Sunday, Dec. 21, from 11:15 a.m. to 1:30 p.m.

Dr. Jay Sage, former president of the Jewish Genealogical Society of Greater Boston, will provide an overview of Jewish genealogy, including an introduction to the process and an outline of the concrete steps for getting started on your personal genealogical journey. He then will lead a hands-on workshop to demonstrate how to search your roots online.

Dr. Sage retired as a physicist from MIT Lincoln Laboratory to pursue his interest in Jewish genealogy. The Jewish Genealogical Society of Greater Boston helps people discover and research their Jewish family history. Formed in 1982 as a study group for people looking into their Jewish family history, it is now a 501(c)(3) charitable organization with more than 500 members, and is affiliated with more than 70 other Jewish genealogical societies worldwide.

Light kosher refreshments will be served. RSVP by Dec. 17 to the Temple Sinai office at 781-784-6081.

This event is part of a much larger, exciting series of programs being held throughout the year in connection with Temple Sinai’s Holocaust Torah Scroll Restoration Project. The temple is embarking on a year-long project to restore its Holocaust Torah Scroll, number 655, one of 1,564 scrolls recovered in Prague after the Holocaust. It dates back to the late 1700s and is one of the last remaining artifacts of the Jewish community of Prestice, Czechoslovakia.

Currently marred by holes, missing letters and seams that need to be re-sewn, this precious scroll remains beautiful, with both Ashkenazi and Sephardic elements and hidden mystical symbols waiting to be discovered.

Trained Torah scribe Rabbi Kevin Hale will be restoring the Torah. During this process, community members and children in the Temple’s Religious School will have the opportunity to participate in a special Torah letter writing session with Rabbi Hale.

Other events in this year-long series will include a lecture series by Rabbi Ariel Burger, music of Eastern Europe and a Holocaust survivor speaker. For more information, visit www.temple-sinai.com.
