Temple Sinai will hold a special holocaust Remembrance event Tuesday, April 14, 6:30-8 p.m., including a special presentation by Janet Applefield, a Holocaust survivor. This event is free and open to the public.
Janet Singer Applefield was born Gustawa Singer in 1935 in Krakow, Poland. She was just 4 years old when World War II began. Unable to escape, her parents sent her away with a cousin’s nursemaid. Soon after, her mother was sent to a concentration camp and her father was sent to the Krakow Ghetto. She lived with her brutally abusive cousin until her cousin was taken by the Germans. Janet was left alone on a sidewalk, where a Polish woman, unaware of her Jewish identity, brought her to a family farm. At the end of the war, she was taken to a Jewish orphanage where she became one of “Lena’s Children” until she miraculously was reunited with her father. Janet and her father came to America in 1947.
Janet holds a master’s in social work at Boston University, and as a clinical social worker has counseled patients ranging from juvenile offenders of hate crimes to seniors. Currently, Janet is writing a memoir and making a documentary film that chronicles her experiences as a child survivor of the Holocaust.
Janet will be accompanied by her daughter Deb Milley of Sharon, who often speaks solo or alongside her mother, sharing her perspective on what it means to be a critical link to the next generation of descendants. She talks of the wonderful blessings and heavy burdens that accompany this important legacy.
Also as part of this event, seventh graders at Temple Sinai will present a reading of the play 9 Spoons, which tells the story of a group of girls in a concentration camp during the Holocaust collecting spoons to make a Menorah so that they can celebrate Hanukkah. It is a wonderful story of human strength and conviction in desperate times.
Temple Sinai is located at 25 Canton St., Sharon. RSVP to Kim Soper, 781-784-6081, or ksoper@temple-sinai.com.
