Yom HaShoah Commemoration with Dr. Alexis Herr

April 19, 2015 Acton

Congregation Beth Elohim’s annual Yom HaShoah Commemoration will include a ceremony with candle-lighting led by Rabbi Lewis Mintz and Cantor Sarra Spierer and a talk by Dr. Alexis Herr. Dr. Herr, who lectures in the Holocaust and Genocide department at Keene State College, recently completed her Ph.D. at the Strassler Center for Holocaust and Genocide Studies at Clark University. Her dissertation, “Compensated Compliance: The History and Memory of the Holocaust in Italy,” scrutinized a ten-year history of Fossoli di Carpi, a deportation camp for POWs, Jews, and anti-Fascists during the Holocaust and a prison for Fascists, a displaced persons camp, and Catholic orphanage in the postwar era. Reimaging the bystander category, Ms. Herr analyzed the financial motivations that drove the local population’s compliance with genocide.
