Yom Kippur – 5776

September 23, 2015 Boston

The Nehar Shalom Community Synagogue invites you to join us for the High Holy Days, 5776. Rosh Hashana starts Sunday evening, September 13th, and Nehar Shalom’s High Holy Day services are open to all. We are a small, fully inclusive and egalitarian congregation supported entirely by membership and contributions. We are committed to social justice and the pursuit of peace, while offering a spiritually vibrant, traditionally oriented approach to Jewish life and prayer.

We do not sell tickets or assign seats, but to help us plan we do need to know in advance if you will be joining us, and if so, we need to know who you are and how to reach you. Though we do not sell ticket, we are supported entirely by membership and contributions, and would appreciate that you make as generous a contribution as you are able to. Your contribution helps Nehar Shalom keep its doors open. Please consider that the cost of High Holy Day tickets around Boston ranges from $100 – $360 per ticket. Contributions can be made online when you register or by check.

Please register here: https://neharshalom.org/services/high-holy-days/high-holy-day-sign-up-form/

There will be a tent in the back of the house where parents and children can find respite. On the first day of Rosh Hashana and on Yom Kippur, there will be a program geared towards children ages 3-7 and their parents from 11:00 – 12:00. Please indicate when you register if you and your children plan to participate.

The Nehar Shalom community uses a High Holy Day prayerbook or machzor published in 2011, Mahzor Lev Shalem, that is breathtaking in its scope, depth, and beauty. With a gender-neutral English translation, Mahzor Lev Shalem offers extensive commentary that speaks to heart and mind, along with innovative additions, such as “Prayers of Brokenness and Wholeness” before the sounding of the shofar, a prayer for those who cannot fast, and a Yizkor memorial for a person remembering an abusive parent. Adorning, and at times offering counterpoint to the traditional prayers, there are alternative readings and kavvanot/intentions that reflect a wide range of perspective and experience.
Speaking poignantly to the importance of such diverse expression, the senior editor, Rabbi Edward Feld, writes in the introduction: “We have been conscious that a High Holy Day Congregation is a diverse community and what speaks to some will not resonate with others. We hope that among the different voices you will find something that inspires your prayer.” To learn more about Mahzor Lev Shalem, you can visit: http://www.rabbinicalassembly.org/mahzor/welcome.html.

With blessings to you and your loved ones for a sweet, healthy, and fulfilling year; and with fervent prayers for surcease from war and violence throughout the world.
