On the tenth of December, the second day of Hanukkah, the Volunteering Subcommittee of the Boston-Haifa Connection Young Leadership Committee organized a festive event for parents and children from one of Boston-Haifa’s flagship programs “Horim Bamerkaz / Parents at the Center.” There were different stations run by the volunteers including “sports” stations like a-candle-to-a-bottle, musical chairs and bowling. There were also creative stations where people made dreidels, menorahs, and Hanukkah crowns. There was also a face-painting station and more.
This event highlighted the exciting program opportunities and services available through Horim Bamerkaz, as well as fostering and building community among the parents in the neighborhoods of Kiryat Eliezer and Bat Galim in Haifa. In addition, it is a great example of Boston-Haifa cross-committee collaboration and support to our work.
The volunteers had a great time and they made a wonderful connection with the parents and the children. We lit candles together, sang Hanukkah songs and, of course, ate a lot of sufganiot (jelly donuts). The children ran between stations with smiling faces and you could see how much light this celebration brought into their families’ lives, proving how much people in this city care about each other.
This is the first activity of the Volunteer Committee’s project of “adopting the Kiryat Eliezer neighborhood.” There are other activities planned later in this neighborhood like painting a mural in a high school and a celebration in a nursing home.
