Jeanine Harushingingo has been interning at JFS of Metrowest for the past 10 months and was recently honored at the Volunteer Appreciation Event in late-June. Jeanine grew up in a refugee camp in Tanzania but resettled in Worcester, MA in July of 2007. After completing her degree in Biology and French from Assumption College, she enrolled in the Americorps Internship Program, which placed her at JFS of Metrowest.
During her time at JFS of Metrowest, Jeanine has had several titles. She is responsible for recruiting and training volunteers for resettlement, citizenship and the Reducing the Achievement Gap programs. Within these three programs, she works with clients on an individual basis. This past year she founded Chapter Girls, which is a book club for girls in 5th grade at the Woodrow Wilson School. A few JFS employees as well as some board members facilitated the book club and met with the girls once a week for six weeks. Being an immigrant, Jeanine found a personal connection with JFS of Metrowest’s citizenship programs. She helped coordinate a citizenship clinic, which gathers members of the Metrowest community to assist individuals complete the confusing United States citizenship application.
Jeanine loves working for JFS of Metrowest and has seen first hand how her work has impacted the Metrowest community. She also has enjoyed learning how about how non-profit businesses operate. Besides working at JFS of Metrowest, Jeanine watches movies with her friends and cooks traditional African food. Jeanine recently accepted a full time position at JFS of Metrowest which will start once she completes Americorps Internship Program.
