I am baffled as to why people are surprised at such behavior by Penn State Coach Sandusky. This kind of behavior goes on every second, of every minute, of every hour, of every day. There are those who turn away from it, and those who choose to turn into it and see the violence within our world. These are the people who understand the importance of eliminating it and who will work tirelessly toward that goal.

Yet, most will not take a preventive stand until it happens to ‘them’ or someone they ‘love’ – until then it is not personal enough to warrant action. Even with all the bullying going on in our middle and high schools. Our youth are killing themselves over such matters. And people are understandably outraged over such matters; yet, they stand still – only to use their mouth and vent – always expecting others to do the work that is necessary.

Coach Sandusky should be ashamed of himself and so should his colleagues; along with the other students who, despite what they say, knew what was going on.

People think it costs money to do the right thing, but they are wrong.

People think they cannot effect change, but again, they are wrong.

People are blinded by happy, wishful thoughts, while horrific acts are being committed every second, of every minute, of every hour, of every day.

You may think I am negative, but on the contrary, I am only being realistic. Our children need to develop into leaders within their own social circles in order to make the tough, better choices. Our schools and we as a society, are not arming them with this kind of knowledge. Our children also need to know how to protect themselves. They need to lose the fear and become empowered. They need to be educated on how to better protect themselves to their fullest potential against bullying, physical and sexual assaults, and other dangerous situations.

And this empowerment goes way beyond just the physical aspects of the proven self defense training system from which I teach.

99% of violent situations can be AVOIDED. 99%.

And THAT is what needs to be taught – in addition to the physical aspects to account for the remaining 1%.

There is a balance that takes place when teaching leadership and self protection skills that lends itself to a sense of empowerment and confidence and unwavering determination to do what is right.
