It was raining Tuesday at Camp Harbor View, but instead of going inside and stopping the concert, campers took out their umbrellas and cheered louder! The show on Tuesday by youth performing group Zumix marked the eighth week in the New Center’s summer long performance series, Explore World Arts (to read an introductory post about the program, click here).
Featuring an eclectic mixture of musical styles, the show by Zumix was part of their “Street Program,” in which Boston teenagers write and then perform original music or dance. Among the songs were a soul number, a punk rock song, freestyle rapping, and a jazz piece. There was also a break dancer in the mix, doing hand stands and spins. It was not the prettiest of days, and after the first show it began to rain. But, undeterred, performers moved their equipment under an awning and kept playing, while campers put up umbrellas to shield themselves from the drizzle! After every show, the campers were enthusiastic about seeing kids around their own ages playing such great music and taking initiative! It was truly inspiring and fun for all!
