An Ongoing Resource

Welcome back GBJCL community!

To start the year we wish to share with you a reflection by long time GBJCL tutor and team leader Meryl Loonin from Temple Shir Tikvah in Winchester. Whether volunteers are working with students for the first time or bring years of know-how, each unique experience has its own peaks and valleys and as tutors start their journey this year we hope they know that GBJCL is always here to help. Meryl has tutored for many years at East Somerville Community School, and shared with us how she continues to explore new ways to support her students and tap into the resources of GBJCL.

I have been a volunteer tutor with GBJCL for five years and like to think I have developed a lot of ideas for my sessions. My home office is filled with favorite picture books, poems, and literacy games that have been popular with the mostly second and third grade students I tutor. But this past year, I faced a new set of challenges while working with Monica (not her real name), a first grade student in a Sheltered English immersion program.
