On Monday May 9th, Brazilian Ambassador Fernando Mello Barreto, Consul General of Brazil paid a visit to the Woodrow Wilson Elementary School in Framingham. The visit, sponsored by JFS and the American Jewish Committee, allowed us to show the Ambassador and community the ongoing work JFS has been part of at the Woodrow Wilson Elementary School through our Reducing Achievement Gaps programs.
JFS of Metrowest’s Reducing Achievement Gaps seeks to decrease the risk for growing educational, health and social gaps among Framingham’s most economically and educationally distressed young school age children and their families. Through programs like the United Way of Tri-County funded All-Stars and Wizards, designed to establish positive reading and homework habits (All-Stars) and an appreciation for math and science in young girls (Wizards), and our Healthy Harvest and Weekend Nutrition programs, providing healthy food options for Wilson families, we are able to make a difference in the lives of Wilson kids and their families.
The event began with a school-wide assembly where the children sang both the Brazilian and American national anthems, performed a traditional Brazilian “Farm Dance”, spoke of why they are proud to be Wilson students and sang the Wilson school anthem alongside Principal Robin Welch.
The Ambassador remained after the assembly to visit the All-Stars and Wizards programs. The All-Stars treated him to a recorder performance, an instrument they’ve been learning in school and were eager to practice before him. He then visited the Wizards, who were busy measuring out ingredients to make ice cream and paused to ask him questions and share what they’ve been learning. A successful visit for all!
