December 1st was Rosa Parks day, making this month a great time to learn more about the civil rights icon.
Rosa Parks is best known for her refusal to give up her seat on a segregated bus in December of 1955, but in addition to her defiance she brought calm, clarity and grit to other aspects of the civil rights movement. This month I have selected Rosa Parks’ autobiography as our feature for older readers.
In this historic work, Rosa narrates in a clear voice how a singular act grew out of a lifetime of being oppressed. The author explores both her personal quest for respect, and larger goalfor social change. Illustrating her important reflections are black-and-white photographs contributed by the Library of Congress, the NAACP, and Rosa Parks, herself. A chronology of Parks’ life is also included.
This book is an ALA Notable Book and Best Book for Young Adults, and is often used in the classroom to help students connect to the people behind important moments in history. Age 8-12, Grade 3-6
