Join Kerem Shalom of Concord for “A Maestro’s Secrets: What You See & Cannot See”—an interactive lesson with conductor Susan Davenny Wyner.

What is the alchemy that transforms printed notes into living, breathing art, that draws disparate individuals into a single vision for a piece of music? Susan Davenny Wyner will explore the magic, untangle some of the beat patterns and gestural language used by conductors worldwide, dive into the complexities of an orchestral “score,” and view opposed styles of conducting and leadership. Along the way audience members will be invited to interact, try out conducting patterns, and participate in becoming part of an orchestra.

Susan Davenny Wyner has received international acclaim for her conducting and earlier career as a soprano—including for her performances with the Los Angeles Philharmonic, the Cleveland Orchestra, the Boston Lyric Opera, the Tanglewood Festival, and the Czech Philharmonic Orchestras. She was also the music director and conductor of Boston Midsummer Opera and of the New England String Ensemble. The New York Times has called her conducting “rapturous, richly textured, and emotionally compelling.” The Boston Globe wrote, “Under her baton, the music breathes, lilts, romps, sighs, and sparkles.” Davenny Wyner, currently music director/conductor for Opera Western Reserve and Warren Philharmonic Orchestra, had an accomplished earlier career as a soprano. She sang with the Metropolitan Opera, the Boston Symphony, and the Israel, Los Angeles, and New York Philharmonics with recordings that won Grammy and Grand Prix du disc awards. Her singing career was brought short by an accident that caused vocal cord damage, but her many musical accomplishments continued—and she became a renowned conductor.
