Beth Menachem Chabad and “Baltic Truth” Holocaust documentary present a talk by Holocaust survivor Elly Gotz, who will share an account of survival and overcoming hate.

Elly Gotz was born in Kaunas (also called Kovno), Lithuania, in 1928. In the summer of 1941, Nazi Germany occupied Lithuania. Escaping the violence propagated under the Lithuanian Provisional Government for six weeks, he and his family were forced into the Kovno ghetto. Elly and his family barely survived, and at 16 years old, when the ghetto was liquidated, Elly and his father were deported to the notorious Dachau concentration camp. Elly and his father were forced to do slave labor in the Kaufering sub camp, and were ultimately liberated from Dachau in the spring of 1945.

Elly and his family reunited and spent two years in post-war Germany before immigrating to Norway, then Zimbabwe. Elly graduated from the University of the Witwatersrand with a bachelor of science in engineering. He married in 1958 and immigrated to Toronto in 1964. An engineer, businessman and pilot, Elly published his memoir, “Flights of Spirit,” in 2017 and speaks to thousands of students a year recounting his experiences in the Holocaust and discussing how he overcame hatred, reached his educational goals and rebuilt his life and family after the war.

Doors open at 7; the presentation begins at 7:30 p.m.
