Join us as we welcome Shabbat together! Rick Stone will give a brief d’var Torah during this service.
Saturday, Nov. 19: Shabbat (Livestream available)
- 8:30-9:15 a.m: Talmud on Shabbat: Can Stories Change How We Think and Act? in room 24/25
- 9:30 a.m.-12:00 p.m.: Shabbat morning talk/D’rash during the Shabbat morning main service: Richard will explore this power of story and hopefully open new perspectives for you about Torah and how its stories continue to weave their way into the fabric of our contemporary lives.
Saturday, Nov. 19: “What we can learn from Judaism’s Great Tradition of Storytelling and Story Making” in the Rabbi Samuel Chiel Sanctuary (Livestream available)
1-2 p.m.: Richard will explore these stories through the lens of the “7 Powers of Story” that he writes about in his book, “Story Intelligence,” and conclude with the power of “Envisioning Possibilities,” which asks us Jews—what story do we want to create as we engage with tikkun olam and tikkun halev (repair of the world and the heart).
Saturday, Nov. 20: Performance of “The Maggid: Divine Sparks and Tales of the Baal Shem Tov” in Reisman Hall (Livestream available)
The tales of the Baal Shem Tov continue reverberating in the Jewish soul today. In this one-hour performance, Richard will take you back to the roots of Hasidism in Eastern Europe at a time when the Baal Shem Tov reinvigorated the souls of Jews in the Pale and beyond. Prepare to enter the world of the shtetl and immerse yourself in a mystical tale that will nourish your soul.
Sunday, Nov. 20: The Inter-generational Power of Story in Contemporary Jewish Life in Reisman Hall (Livestream available)
In this interactive program, Richard will show you how our traditions, history, and sacred texts support the idea of sharing stories L’dor v’dor and will demonstrate for you research-based tools to build a robust story tradition in your family across the generations. These approaches to story sharing can be transformative and healing for adults and children today, and in fact, be the deciding factor in developing your children’s resilience and self-esteem.

About Richard Stone
Richard Stone has been working with stories for nearly 30 years, writing fiction and non-fiction; developing story-based products, games, and training tools; exploring how story can help others illuminate what is most authentic in their souls; painting; exploring the mysteries of trees through his photography; and, telling stories.
He is the author of “The Healing Art of Storytelling,” “Stories: The Family Legacy,” “The Kingdom of Nowt,” and “The Patient Survival Handbook,” and co-created the award-winning board game Pitch-A-Story. His new book, “The Seven Powers of Story,” was released in 2020. He is also an artist and photographer, and now lives with his wife Elizabeth Cohen in Decatur, Georgia.
Richard’s book “Story Intelligence: Master Story, Master Life” will be available for purchase both on Saturday evening and Sunday morning following the programs. The book will be available for $20, payable either in cash (exact change only) or via check made payable to Temple Emanuel.
