BIG Pub Tour # 6

November 5, 2015

Even if you’re not from Boston, you may very well know that the Red Sox play at Fenway Park. But even if you are from around here, you might not know all that much about the neighborhood where the park is found. The neighborhood, if you’re curious, got its name in the 1870s when another park, the incredible Emerald Necklace, was built (Fenway Park came around in 1912). Soon thereafter colleges started springing up all around the neighborhood, along with apartment buildings. The main street in much of the Fenway, Boylston Street, was never much to look at, and until recently was filled with parking lots, gas stations, fast-food joints, a few bars, and the Howard Johnson Motor Lodge. Over the past few years a lot of that urban detritus has been replaced with tall buildings, but in what was perhaps a concession to economics masquerading as a concession to history the Howard Johnson’s was converted into the far trendier Verb Hotel, recently made complete with the opening of the Hojoko bar and restaurant, whose name is a nod to its Japanese theme and its Howard Johnson roots.

Look for the Israeli flag!
