Join us at BETC for our annual Paula Lerner Visiting Artist Program! Multi-ethnic, multi-discipline artist and educator TJ Reynolds will present “Black & Jewish,” his emotionally riveting collection of black-and-white portraits that amplify the intersectional identities of Jews of color. Intertwining the portraits with poetry and music, Reynolds creates an enriched, multi-dimensional experience.

This project was inspired by an enlightening conversation with teens who shared their experiences living in the world as both Black and Jewish. Having never had the opportunity to express their experience before, feelings of both belonging and being ostracized poured out and the students found community in their sharing. Reynolds identified with them as a multi-ethnic person and shared the process he uses to embrace and feel embraced in all the communities of his family history.

A Renaissance man who tackles life with gusto, love and abounding energy, Reynolds has taught everything from visual art to hip-hop poetry, African drumming to geometry, in community centers, high-performing schools, juvenile correctional facilities and many other settings across the country.
