Converting Spain: Muslim Converts and the Contemporary Renewal of the Moorish Mediterranean. Dr. Mikaela Rozogan-Soltar (Anthropology, University of Nevada)

Spain was once the center of al-Andalus, the Medieval Moorish (Muslim) empire. Since the 1980’s, after centuries of official state Catholicism, a large Muslim minority has once again emerged in Spain as the result of immigration and large-scale conversions to Islam. This talk explores the conversion process of Sufi converts to Islam in southern Spain. Drawing on ethnographic research with converts, this talk positions their conversion as a personal, national, and global project of spiritual and political transformation in which becoming Muslim means renewing the ethos of medieval Muslim Spain.

Mikaela Rozogen-Soltar is an Assistant Professor of Anthropology at the University of Nevada Reno. Her research focuses on Islam, migration, religious conversion, and historical memory in the mediterranean. Her first book, Spain UnmooredL Migration, Conversion, and the Politics of Islam, will be published by Indiana University Press in March 2017.
