A pioneering mogul of early cinema, Carl Laemmle founded Universal Pictures in 1912. Under Laemmle, Universal was pure innovation and gamble, producing hundreds of comedies, westerns, and monster movies (“Phantom of the Opera,” “Frankenstein,” “Dracula”). He helped establish Hollywood as the world’s movie capital and beat back Thomas Edison’s monopolization of the industry. He hired women directors and gave many Hollywood legends their starts, including Walt Disney and John Ford. But his legacy extends far beyond movies: Laemmle, a German émigré, rescued more than 300 Jewish families from Nazi Germany. An absolute must for cinema lovers!
