Filmmaker, playwright, klezmer musician and cultural interpreter Ruti Lachs will present a celebration of an Irish Jewish community via Zoom. Lachs will share stories, original music and clips from her award-winning video on the history and present of the Cork Jewish community.

As the Irish people throughout their diaspora celebrate St. Patrick’s Day, she will reflect on the small but vital Jewish presence in Ireland’s second city, Cork and environs.

Lachs is a musician, writer and music teacher living in Cork. She has been researching the Cork Jewish community over the last three years and has written a musical set in Cork in the early 1900s, “Been Feather Boa.” In normal times, Lachs performs klezmer music with her band and one-woman comedy musical theater shows, “Sideways on Planet Piano” and “A Different Kettle.”

Lachs’s Cork Jewish culture virtual walk video won a National Heritage Week award in Ireland last year. It has been viewed around the world and as a result she has been contacted by many Jewish people with Cork ancestry now living in the USA, UK and Israel. When the pandemic is over, Lachs is planning to lead tours of Jewish Cork and travel the world meeting her newfound and far-flung Cork Jewish community. She is also hoping to get her musical onto the stage in Ireland and London.

This presentation is also being sponsored by Metropolitan Temple of New York and Munster Jewish Community in Cork, Ireland.
