Join us to commemorate the 77th anniversary of the tragedy with an unfinished film, “Babi Yar of Mine,” by George Melsky, People’s Artist of Ukraine, the highest honor for an artist in Ukraine. The film will be shown in Russian with English subtitles.

This event is to help crowdfund for the film’s completion. Please consider donating.

This program will include a memorial ceremony, the film and a Q&A session with the film director.

About Babi Yar

Babi Yar is a ravine in the Ukrainian capital, Kiev, and a site of massacres carried out by German forces and by local Ukrainian collaborators during their campaign against the Soviet Union in World War II. The first, and best documented, of the massacres took place Sept. 29-30, 1941, killing approximately 33,771 Jews. Russian estimates put the number of killed at nearly 100,000. Today, Babi Yar has come to symbolize the horrific murder of Jews by the Einsatzgruppen, as well as the persistent failure of the world to acknowledge this Jewish tragedy.

After the war, the Soviet government tried to cover this tragedy from the public, and only in 1961, after the publication of the poem “Babi Yar” by Yevgeny Yevtushenko, it became a world-recognized Holocaust tragedy and symbol of mass shootings of Soviet Jews on occupied territories.

“Babi Yar of Mine” will be shown at the new home of Center Makor, with help from its partner, Congregation Kehillath Israel. Please view the trailer here.

Message from director George Melsky

“Memory. It is all about our memories and today’s actions. Ravines and pits in the fighting Soviet Union. Concentration camps like Sobibor, Auschwitz, Treblinka, Salaspils…and now ISRAEL. The state fighting since the date of its creation, for the right to exist. Growing modern anti-Semitism around the world. All of these are today’s Babi Yar of mine! What is Babi Yar of yours? That’s what our movie is exactly about.”
