Join us for an afternoon of exploration, excitement and celebration as we mark the end of the High Holy Day period with a joyful Simchat Torah event. There’s something for everyone at this free gathering, so plan to bring friends and family!

Our schedule:

  • 3:30 p.m. Gather in the sanctuary
  • 3:45 p.m. Explore Simchat Torah as a family in a session of your choice (see choices below)
  • 5 p.m. Join us as we mark the ending and immediate beginning of the Torah-reading cycle and dance to the music of an ensemble of the Klezmer Conservatory Band in our newly remodeled social hall
  • 5:45 p.m. Enjoy sweet treats and build community at a festive oneg

Sessions include:

  • Flags of Simchat Torah: Explore the 300-year-old tradition of using flags at Simchat Torah celebrations. See examples of flags of yesteryear and then work as a family to design a special flag to use during our celebration. We will create a display of family flags after our Simchat Torah celebration to share with the community.
  • Torah Drama: It’s real; explore different stories from the book of Genesis through drama and movement. Consider how things might have played out for the Jewish people if the Torah characters might have behaved differently.
  • The Rhythm of Torah: The Jewish people are a tribal culture with an ancient musical tradition. In the Book of Exodus, we are told that Miriam played her tambourine (drum) in celebration of the miracle of the splitting of the Red Sea. Join us as we explore the power of drumming as a conduit for celebration and inspiration. No experience necessary.
  • Dances of Torah: During the Torah service and on Simchat Torah we dance with the Torah scrolls. Explore the place of dance and movement in our tradition and learn some traditional Israeli folk dances that we’ll use during our Simchat Torah celebration.
  • Plus Rabbis Laura J. Abrasley and Allison Berry will lead sessions as well.
