Author Mimi Lemay will speak about her family’s journey in affirming the gender of their son, Jacob, and her own journey away from an ultra-Orthodox community.

What We Will Become: A Mother, a Son, and a Journey of Transformation” was a finalist for the 2020 Massachusetts Book Awards. Lemay is a 2020 Commonwealth Heroine, an award granted by the Massachusetts Commission on the Status of Women. She holds a master’s in law and diplomacy from the Fletcher School at Tufts University.

Lemay is an author, advocate for transgender rights and a member of Human Rights Campaign’s Parents for Transgender Equality Council. Her essay, “A Letter to My Son Jacob on His 5th Birthday,” went viral in 2015, followed by the NBC Nightly News segment “Jacob’s Journey: Life as a Transgender 5-Year-Old,” which was the network’s most-viewed segment on social media. Lemay and her entire family continue to educate and advocate for gender-diverse youth, fighting for passage of equality laws in Massachusetts and across the nation.
