Professor Mary C. Boys will deliver the Center for Christian-Jewish Learning’s eighth annual John Paul II Lecture in Christian-Jewish Relations: “Walking You Make the Road”: Discerning the Way in Jewish-Christian Relations Today.

This lecture will focus on ameliorating the chasm between what historians and biblical scholars are learning about religious groups in the Mediterranean world of antiquity and how many—if not most—Christians understand the New Testament passages that arose in that context. It will lay out a synthesis of the most salient scholarship regarding terminology, rhetoric, categories and methods in the hopes of providing a framework for a narrative about reorienting the origin stories of Judaism and Christianity.

Mary C. Boys is the Skinner and McAlpin Professor of Practical Theology at Union Theological Seminary, New York City, as well as its former academic vice president and dean. She is the author of six books, including her recent “Redeeming our Sacred Story: The Death of Jesus and Relations between Jews and Christians,” and is also editor or co-editor of three books. Boys is the recipient of honorary doctorates from Hebrew Union College-Jewish Institute of Religion, The Catholic Theological Union, The Jewish Theological Seminary of America and Gratz College. She has been a vowed member since 1968 of the Sisters of the Holy Names of Jesus and Mary, a congregation of Roman Catholic women.
